Event results
The Grand Memorial is an open handicap cross country event, held today after being delayed back in May due to the weather (i.e. so much rain the stream was dangerous). Unfortunately this reschdeduling meant numbers were down, plus we had no kids races. The weather conditions today were perfect for running - blue skies with a cool southerly blowing up the valley to push competitors along on the home straight. The course, on the other hand, was tough: while it was firm underfoot, it was very rough due to cattle hoof prints that had dried into solid holes - plenty of scope for twisted ankles for the unwary. As usual, there were eight stream crossings per 2km plus two or three bogs to navigate.
Officially there is a 4km race for women and juniors, and 8km for the men. In reality all runners have the flexibility to choose which distance they want to run. In fact, there is a new trophy for 2026, a Tony Randell memorial trophy for the fastest woman over 8km.
First across the line with a handicap based on a poor season was Mike Waterman, with AJ in second and Katie Jenkins (fastest woman and second overall over 8km) in third. Paul Evans was fastest man (by about 5 minutes), and earns the Dad Philp Pewter Pot, one of the club's oldest and most special trophies.
