Our final club event for the year!
Like the last two years, we used the short 1.5km lap - 800m of the Karori Park track, and 700m of steep hill up behind the park. Conditions were sunny but there was a biting cold southerly that kept temperatures cool. The course was very firm underfoot this year.
This year's turnout was larger than last year's, so we had eleven teams with six members in each. Each team had a mix of club members, including walkers, kids and super-masters. Each team had a short lap (track only - walkers and the youngest juniors), then three 1-lap runners, one 2-lap runner and one 3-lap runner. As is tradition, teams could select their runners to run in any order depending on their strategy - perhaps trying to get ahead by running their fast 3-lap runners early and hoping the later runners can defend the lead - or perhaps running the faster runners at the end, going for the fast finish and chasing down the front teams. While this makes it tricky to keep track of how your team is doing, it makes it for very exciting finishes!
With careful team selection by the handicappers, the results this year were very close - after an hour of racing, all teams finished within five minutes of each other, and there was only a bit over 3 minutes covering second to tenth places!
But one minute out in front was Kevin's team, featuring Terry, Jack, Peter, Brian, Graeme and Kevin. Kevin was especially excited because it was his first club race win in 30 years of being a member!
(Note one team decided to run three two-lappers instead of a three-lapper. We judge this strategy was probably a disadvantage to the team so no penalty was applied!)
