After a week of cold rain and southerly winds in Wellington, the weather gods came to the party for the weekend of racing in Sunny Napier, for the 27 Olympic Harrier runners ranging in age of U12 to over 50, plus family and coaches. 15 were also selected to represent the Wellington Centre, wearing the yellow singlet for the individual race on Saturday. Sunday Olympic Harriers fielded 5 teams into the Mixed Relay competition, 1 social grade and 4 competitive grades.
The course was a spectator's dream, with the two 1km loops criss-crossing the road to Mission Estate. The first 1km loop included a hill (where concert goers usually sit) and the second k was soft underfoot, getting muddier as racing progressed and included a token hay bale to hurdle twice per lap.
As the Masters race was one of the early races, I was able to cheer on our older Junior and senior athletes. Highlight of the day was cheering Toby Gualter, in the Senior Men's Race, taking an individual National Silver medal and the first Wellingtonian home.
The camaraderie and support for athletes young and old made me proud to be an Olympic Harrier! Well done Team Olympic.
