National Road Relay Championships, Fielding Saturday, 28 September 2002
Updated 24 Mar 2013.

A tough undulating country course with a strong norwesterly blowing.

This year, the senior men were always going to find it tough with five of last year’s team not being available. Mysteriously they were still put in A grade, in which they finished 12th (22nd overall). However the hardest part for them was accepting being beaten by the Masters team! The Masters team had been strengthened through the addition of Barry Prosser and Chris Speakman and were 6th of 19 (3rd in a block of 4 Wellington teams!)

The juniors were all running in the national relay for the first time. The Junior Men A team were 9th, with Matt running fastest equal lap 2 time. The mainly U14 junior men B team was 17th, but have many years to gain experience and improve in this race! The junior women team was 5th, with Dana and Jane picking up second fastest lap times.

A summary of the results are below. Official results are no longer available.

Lap descriptions

Long course - 67.432km

Lap Distance Description 1 9.394 Starts at Manfeild Park and heads north west out of town, uphill all the way and straight into the wind. Finishes with a murderous 800m climb up Mt Biggs. Will massacre the legs of anyone who has now run 7 races in a row and cause them to finish nearly a minute behind Barry. 2 10.146 Mt Biggs to Halcombe, with a small detour to take in a couple of extra hills. Downhill into Halcombe. 3 9.771 Cross wind or head wind most of the way. Some viscous hills to keep everyone honest. 4 9.715 Fast, fast, fast - tail wind all the way except for the sting in the tail - 1km into the wind and slightly uphill. 5 9.721 3km of gravel into the wind with some steep pinches. Then predominately crosswind and predominately downhill back to Halcombe. 6 9.541 Another tail wind section. A couple of steep gullies to traverse near the start, a deceptive gentle rise for 5km, and a steep downhill in the last kilometre which will be tough on anyone who went out too quick at the start. 7 9.143 The flattest of them all. A quick lap back to Mansfeild Park.

Short course - 38.221km

Lap Distance Description 1 6.523 Same as the long course but finishes before the climb up Mt Biggs. 2 7.084 Ascend Mt Biggs, then as for the first half of lap 2 of the long course. 3 5.930 As for the second half of lap 2 of the long course, with some rollercoaster hills to start with and a downhill finish into Halcombe. 4 7.139 Traverses the gullies of lap 6 of the long course, with the changeover near the descent to the changeover. 5 7.250 Down the hill and back to the Feilding town boundary. 6 4.296 Through town to the finish at Mansfeild Park.
