Saturday, 8 Aug 2015, 10:00 to 12:00: The Great Bays Relay Turkey Trot, Island Bay

2014 details (2015 TBA):

Wellington Harrier Athletic Club invites all walkers to participate in the “Turkey Trot” walked in conjunction with the Bays Relay.

What is a “Turkey Trot”? It’s an event where you estimate your time for the distance (5 km) and results are decided on how close you finish to your estimate. The catch is that nobody is allowed to wear a watch or receive sideline advice on their progress times!

The event is great fun for competitive and recreational walkers. We’ll even admit “Nordic Walkers” if they want to try and all finishers receive the traditional walker’s peanut slab!

We try to finish the event before the runners start, so that the keenest of you can join a relay team as well; or at least get out and support them!

Entry: Register at the caravan at Island Bay, by recording your name and estimated time (and arranging the entry fee), from 10.00 onwards.

Entry Fee: $8. If you’re a registered member of your club, we’ll invoice the Club direct. If you don’t belong to a Club, or are a “Social Member” please pay when you register.

Start Time: 10.30 a.m. Judging: Walkers will not be judged, but the race manager will be watching for “running”. He will also be happy to offer any comments on style (if asked).

Prizegiving: At the finish line (opposite Warehouse on Lyall Bay Parade), as soon as the last walker finishes. (And the race manager has double checked his maths!)

Saturday, 22 Aug 2015, 12:30 to 16:00: Wellington Road Running Champs (interclub event), Reservoir Road (Whitcher Rd, off Moores Valley Rd), Wainuiomata
Updated 16 Aug 2015.

Athletics Wellington Road Championships, incorporating Olympic Harriers Club Road Championships.

2015 details

Wainuiomata, Reservoir Road: This is a closed sealed road that meanders through a picturesque native bush valley with a hill on one side and a river on the other side. Because it is in a valley it is sheltered from wind but can be quite cool, so dress warmly. Come and join us in a lovely setting, where the only noises you are likely to hear, other than the yelling of the spectators, are the birds and the river below. The course is based on a 2km loop: 1km up the road and 1km back.

Parking: There is parking either at the course, down by the clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park or at the end of Hine Road. If you want to use public transport, you can catch a 170 bus to Wainuiomata from Waterloo Railway station or Lower Hutt Shopping Centre and get off the bus at the end of Hine Road.

Refreshments: Barbecue, hot drinks, cold drinks, and muffins will be for sale at the tent area by the start/finish line.

Toilet Facilities: There will be 4 portaloos on site. There are also toilets situated next to the clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park.

Entries & Timing Chips: Entry is only open to registered Wellington athletes who are entered on the clubnet database with timing chip number recorded and marked as financial members. Timing Chips must be worn for all races. Clubs must notify Daryl Bloomfield daryl@fedude.co.nz the intention of any athlete wishing to run out of grade by Wednesday 19 August (eg. Master enter as Open). The 5K non-champ race is for masters women or men and open men who don’t wish to run 10K. Names must be sent to Daryl Bloomfield daryl@fedude.co.nz by Wednesday 19 August. Clubs must make sure all athletes have their correct chip. Athletes must remember to wear their correct chip. No late entries will be available on the day. Replacement chips will only be issued up until 12:15pm on the day of the race.

Age Grades: For all grades, except Masters, ages are at 31st December 2015. For Masters’ grades, ages are age on the day.

Examples:

  • U18 = will be 15, 16 or 17 at end of this year.

  • U13 = will be 11 or 12 at end of this year.
  • U11 = will be 9 or 10 at end of this year.
  • U9 = will be 8 or younger at year end.

The Database automatically enters athletes into the correct age race. Clubs must ensure that athletes start in the correct race.
