Wednesday, 30 Jul 2014, 19:30 to 21:00: Special General Meeting [RE new clubrooms], Clubrooms
The purpose of the Special General Meeting is to approve the expenditure of capitation fees towards the establishment of the Multi-sport clubrooms on Alex Moore Park. The capitation fees are an easier alternative to raising funds via raffles etc. The club has the flexibility to decide how this money will be raised. This money will be used by the Alex Moore Sport and Community Inc. board to pay for things which are not covered by grants. The capitation fee is $10 per senior member and $5 for under 18s and comes to $1020 for this year. A similar amount is expected in future years until the facility is built.

In July 2011 the committee endorsed the concept of a combined clubrooms on Alex Moore Park but outlined a number of requirements to be met in the final design.
These requirements were:
  • That there is a permanent dedicated space for the club to meet, deliver club notices and make presentations, prior to our going out for a run on Saturdays, such that we are not disturbed (or we do not disturb) any other activities related to other codes at the same time.
  • That there is a permanent dedicated space for club history such as photographs, trophies and an honours board to be displayed.
  • That there is a means of securing people's belongings while they are out on their run.
  • That there are designated women's showers and changing rooms.
  • That there is a permanent dedicated room for committee meetings.

Having a permanent designated space is not part of the principles of the sportsville model which aims for maximum utilisation of the facility, precluding designated spaces which may sit unused for the majority of the time. Permanent designated spaces were removed from the original concept plans after a review by Peter Burley because of the cost. We need to consider whether a space being available whenever we need it is sufficient. The operations committee is tasked with ensuring the other requirements are able to be met.

We had a meeting in March to try and tease out any questions and concerns people may have with regard to the project but only seven people turned up. The two main questions raised at the meeting (apart from the points above) were:
  • What's in it for us?
  • What will the ongoing financial contribution (presumably a capitation fee) be once the building is complete?
The estimate for the cost of the build alone is currently $4.2 million, so with outfitting, this is likely to be around $5 million. Negotiations with the Wellington City Council are underway to, hopefully, secure a dollar-for-dollar funding deal. Because of the leverage of numbers with multiple clubs involved, funding should be easier to come by (although it won't be easy). This applies to both the building phase and the ongoing operations.

Harriers is not like the other sports involved in this project because we are not tied to a ground (although it is good to have for some of the training). We do have times, such as our combined runs with Hutt Valley and the Centenary celebrations, where a larger space would be desirable. We need to consider our requirements, possible alternatives and what is best value for money and make a decision whether or not to proceed as partners in this project.

Hadyn Smith and Mel Smalley from the Alex Moore Park Sport and Community board will be along to answer any questions you may have.

If you think of any questions you'd like answered, please email Mark Handley (mark_handley@moh.govt.nz) beforehand so he can forward them to Hadyn and Mel.

Run around the perimeter of Field A, then turn right back up the path that you came down, and turn left at the top of the hill and run around the perimeter of the north east field (Field B). Once you have run around Field B, head up the hill to the top (south) field (Field C), and run round its perimeter. Head back down the hill and turn left onto Field D. Run around the perimeter back to the start to do your next lap/or to the finish chute if you have completed your race.

Sunday, 3 Aug 2014, 18:00 to 21:00: Olympic Cinema Evening [Social], Time Cinema, 191 Sutherland Road, Lyall Bay
The esteemed Social Committee has, for your pleasure, organised a movie evening for 6pm Sunday the 3rd of August.

The privately owned Time Cinema in Lyall Bay will be the venue and seating will be limited. The theatre itself is a private Museum of cimematic memorabilia and well worth a look just for that alone.

The movie will be the all-time classic CASABLANCA, and to see it on the big screen in its original film form is a rare treat indeed. The 1942 classic won three academy awards, including best picture, best screenplay and best director and stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. It is preserved in the US National Film Registry as culturally and historically significant, is in Time magazines list of 100 movies of all time (no rankings given) and the American Film Institute has it ranked No. 2 of all movies ever made (so it is pretty bloody good).

The tickets are $20 and for that you will receive: a seat in the theatre, two glasses of wine (red/white stocks dependent) or two glasses of grape juice, cheese and crackers and a small sammy or two. So that's pretty damn good value. You get the main feature, a small amusing short, you get to stand for the Queen and an intermission. How old school is that?

Tickets are limited and this is a once in a lifetime deal, so first in first served good people.

We hope to hear from you soon like ASAP.
Play it again Sam.

Contact: Mark Handley (mark_handley@moh.govt.nz) or Miles Coverdale.

Editor's note: the cinema is in a residential street, at the back of the owner's house. If you are looking for something that looks like the Embassy you will be confused!

Saturday, 16 Aug 2014, 10:00 to 12:00: The Great Bays Relay Turkey Trot, Island Bay
Updated 1 Aug 2014.
2014 details:
Wellington Harrier Athletic Club invites all walkers to participate in the “Turkey Trot” walked in conjunction with the Bays Relay.

What is a “Turkey Trot”?

It’s an event where you estimate your time for the distance (5 km) and results are decided on how close you finish to your estimate. The catch is that nobody is allowed to wear a watch or receive sideline advice on their progress times!

The event is great fun for competitive and recreational walkers. We’ll even admit “Nordic Walkers” if they want to try and all finishers receive the traditional walker’s peanut slab!

We try to finish the event before the runners start, so that the keenest of you can join a relay team as well; or at least get out and support them!

Entry: Register at the caravan at Island Bay, by recording your name and estimated time (and arranging the entry fee), from 10.00 onwards.

Entry Fee: $8. If you’re a registered member of your club, we’ll invoice the Club direct. If you don’t belong to a Club, or are a “Social Member” please pay when you register.

Start Time: 10.30 a.m.

Judging: Walkers will not be judged, but the race manager will be watching for “running”. He will also be happy to offer any comments on style (if asked).

Prizegiving: At the finish line (opposite Warehouse on Lyall Bay Parade), as soon as the last walker finishes. (And the race manager has double checked his maths!)

If no footpath is available, competitors must run within ONE METRE of the right hand edge of the sealed surface of the roadway. Competitors and supporters must obey the directions of the Race Referee, Race Marshals, and Police Officers at all times.

Updated 19 Aug 2014.

Athletics Wellington Road Championships, incorporating Olympic Harriers Club Road Championships.

2014 details:

Wainuiomata, Reservoir Road This is a closed sealed road that meanders through a picturesque native bush valley with a hill on one side and a river on the other side. Because it is in a valley it is sheltered from wind but can be quite cool, so dress warmly. Come and join us in a lovely setting, where the only noises you are likely to hear, other than the yelling of the spectators, are the birds and the river below. The course is based on a 2km loop: 1km up the road and 1km back.

Parking: There is parking either at the course, down by the clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park or at the end of Hine Road. If you want to use public transport, you can catch a 170 bus to Wainuiomata from Waterloo Railway station or Lower Hutt Shopping Centre and get off the bus at the end of Hine Road.

Refreshments: Barbecue, hot drinks, cold drinks, and muffins will be for sale at the tent area by the start/finish line.

Toilet Facilities: There will be 4 portaloos on site. There are also toilets situated next to the clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park.

Entries & Timing Chips: Entry is only open to registered Wellington athletes. Timing Chips must be worn for all races. Updated Chip allocation lists must be forwarded to Tony McKone. Clubs must also notify Tony McKone the intention of any athlete wishing to run out of grade by Monday 12 August. (eg. Master enter as Open) The 5km non-champ race is for masters women or men and open men who don’t wish to run 10km. Names must be sent to Tony McKone by Monday 12 August. Replacement chips will only be issued up until 12:15pm on the day of the race.

Age Grades: For all grades, except Masters, ages are at 31st December 2013. For Masters’ grades, ages are age on the day.
