Our awesome summer runs take us out to different scenic parts of Wellington every weekend. This week we are heading to Dry Creek Quarry, Belmont Regional Park. You can find it here.
The Southern Crossing
This race traverses the Southern Crossing tramping route which is the classic Tararua route from Kaitoke to Otaki Forks, transforming the 3-day hard tramp into a 1-day mountain run of epic proportions.
The 35km event is defined by the weather conditions. The Tararua Mountain Range is notoriously changeable environment, with high winds and low cloud being common for a 10km section of the race when above the bushline. Extreme care is required.
Participants start the Southern Crossing in waves, depending on their estimated finish time, those aiming for a fast time start later in the morning.
In distance, the track is 35.4km and the total asccent is 2,250m. The total descent is 2,475m.
The first part of the race, 16.43km to Alpha Hut, is the hardest, both physically and mentally. Initially, the climb from Kaitoke is of moderate steepness and, if it hasn't rained too much, is reasonable good underfoot, although it tends to be a bit "clayey". There is a short flattish section after about 6km which opens out for some great views, but after that you plunge back into the trees where there is deep mud, tree roots, steep ascents and the interminable Marchant Ridge, before you reach Alpha Hut, just at the break of the tree line.
From the check point at Alpha Hut the route is above the bush line and traverses various peaks and knobs to the highest and most exposed point at Mt Hector (1,529m). After one more climb over Field Peak you reach Kime Hut, a total of 8.2km from Alpha Hut. From there is a long and steep descent, of 10.8km, to the finish at Otaki Forks.
The descent involves initially a rocky track above the tree line which, once entering the bust at Field Hut, transforms into a mix of tree-roots and mud or slippery clay. There are some good sections along here and it is all able to be run.
The finish at Otaki Forks, on the grassy flats of the Waiotaruru River, is reached after a short grass covered plateau followed by crossing the river over the foot bridge.
Entry Fees:
Individuals: 10km & 5km Run and Walk – $25
Teams: 5km – $75 (for teams of three)

This is it! The start of the harriers season for 2019 in Wellington's northern suburbs! New and returning members are invited to come along to welcome in the new year of running.
Our club gets people of all ages off the couch and into the outdoors every week. Whether its a cross country race across farmland, a road run through suburbs you've never explored, laps on the track, or a trail run in the great outdoors, we do it. If running isn't your thing or seems intimidating, we have walkers that take part in all those same activities. Age is no barrier - our oldest members are in their 80s and fighting fit.
Based from our clubrooms at Alex Moore Park, Johnsonville, our Introduction Day will have running and walking packs for all fitness levels. We will also have calendars for the year, an opportunity to meet with coaches, and will talk through the season coming up.
Whatever your motivation, whether it's simply to get fitter and healthier, or to get faster and stronger, we will be able to help you achieve your goals.
All ages, all abilities, all motivations. Join us.
Come take part in this community fun run/walk to raise money for a covered outdoor area at Raroa Intermediate School.
We encourage as many members as we can to enter - this will be a great recruiting opportunity in our area. WEAR YOUR CLUB GEAR!

Times:
1200: Help set up course
1400: First race (kids)
Info
Our first club races for the season - the Maiden and Perston. There will be four races: two for the younger kids (700m and 1km), the Maiden (2km cross country for those who have never won a race before) and the Perston Memorial (2km cross country - same course as the Maiden, but for those who have won a trophy before). The course will be the same as last year's, at Grenada North Park.
We will need club members to help set up the course beforehand and pack it away afterwards - many hands make light work!
The Maiden and Perston Memorial races are sealed handicap - the club handicapper has predictions of everyone's times, and the handicap winners are those who beat their handicap times by the greatest margins.
The first trophies of the year are up for grabs too - awarded to both race winners and handicap winners.
These races will be followed by afternoon tea at the clubrooms. please bring a plate to share.
And one other thing - these races serve as trials for the Shaw Baton interclub relays held at Battle Hill later in April.
Multisport event - kayak, mountain bike and mountain run. Do an individual leg, a duathlon or the full event individually or as a team.
Instead of a club run, we are encouraging all members - juniors, seniors and masters - to join in the Wellington Mountain Running Champs.
We won Queen Club of the Mountain title last year, and our kids won us the Prince and Princesses Club of the Mountain Title. Let's see if we can get the men's title back!
This is also a great chance to support Wainui Harriers - another small club with an awesome supportive social feel.
2019 info from Wainui Harriers:
Runners 16 and over can enter the NZ Champs which also gives automatic entry to Wellington Champs if you are a wellington based runner. if you don't wish to enter the NZ Champs but wish to just enter the Wgtn Champs, you can also do this for a lower entry fee.
Runners Under 16 can enter Wellington champs only as there are no NZ champs for U16.
Entries must be made online this year and entries close 1 week before the race. They are made through athletics NZ and require a login. You don't want to leave this to the last minute as remembering passwords and logins can be problematic for many of us. Also you need to pay online so if this is an issue for you, you may need to sort this with a friend paying for you with their card. The close off entry time is Sunday 7 April at midnight, the race is on Saturday 13 April. Many people like to leave entering to the last minute for all sorts of reasons, don't leave it too late, we are sorry we can't make the deadline later and we can't have on the day entries due to NZ Champs requirements and the need to have accurate systems in place for the day.
Course has a new finish area. we finish down on the flat so you run to the bottom of the hill and turn left up the footpath to a flat reserve, so no finish on the steep downhill section. Otherwise the course is the same.
Age Grades have changed for 2019 for all Harriers events. We now have 2 year age grades for those not yer seniors. For this event, U18 and U20 are a combined U20 age grade, then U16, U14, U12 and U10. And age must be taken as how old you will be at the end of this year, so if you will be 16 at the end of the year, you will be in the U20/U18 race, if you are 14 or 15 at the end of the year you will be in the U16 race, etc. Senior and Masters are as usual with masters being age on race day.
If you have already entered, great! We hope you and all our Wellington Clubs support this event with it being a NZ Champs. We have kept prices considerably lower than what is usually paid by people to do a National event. Events are always better when you have lots of people to compete with.
We hope to see you on the 13th April.
