Saturday, 12 Feb 2005, 13:00: NZ Combined Event Champs
Union NZ Combined Event Championships - Day 1
Venue: Newtown Park

[Details]

Participation in Combined Events has dwindled in Wellington in recent years, and there's scope for a lot more people to have a go! It would be great if our track and field athletes started attempting the basics of some other events. (For example, I've noticed that sprinters like David Falealili and Tim Hawkes also throw a mean javelin!)

The Combined Events are:
  • Decathlon for M19, Senior Men and Masters Men
    • Day 1: 100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 400m
    • Day 2: 110m Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault, Javelin, 1500m
  • Octathlon for M16
    • Day 1: 100m, Long Jump, Shot Put, 400m
    • Day 2: 110m Hurdles, High Jump, Javelin, 1000m
  • Heptathlon for W16, W19, Senior Women and Masters Women
    • Day 1: 100m Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, 200m
    • Day 2: Long Jump, Javelin, 800m
Athletes may enter individually, or through their clubs and the Centre and I can supply entry forms.

We're also willing to enter a Centre team, and pay the $30 entry fee for nominated athletes, so Clubs, coaches and athletes are invited to make nominations to the Centre Selectors (through me). Nominations should list PBs and expected performances for each event, and the likely points score.

For your interest, the Centre Records for combined events are:
  • Men's Decathlon: 6641 Points (Set in 1990)
  • M19 Decathlon: 6794 Points (Set in 1985)
  • Women's Heptathlon: (Standard: 5000 points)
  • W19 Heptathlon: 4749 Points (Set in 1974)
Those are pretty old, and deserve a shake up!
