TIMES ARE INDICATIVE AT THIS STAGE. We are checking to find out if the Petone wharf will be back in operation by this time - we will confirm times closer to the day.
Somes Island is pretty small, but there are plenty of tracks to explore. The main circuit around the island is 2.2km, and there are tracks across the centre of the island as well.
Go for a run, bring a picnic, and explore the old anti-aircraft gun batteries, lighthouse, quarantine station, and grave sites.
East by West Ferries depart from Queens Wharf in town. They recommend getting there 30 mins before the sailing to make sure you get a ticket. The ferries have a cafe/bar if you need to rehydrate after your run. We have checked through the ferry timetable, and found two return sailing options depending on how long you want to stay and explore.
Biosecurity
Make sure you scrub any dirt / seeds from your shoes before you go - when we arrive at the island one of the rangers will greet us and check our shoes / bags.
The plan:
11:30 Meet at the Queens Wharf ferry office (between Wagamama and Portofino). Maybe go for a coffee at Mojo.
12:00 Ferry departs Queens Wharf
12:20 Ferry arrives Somes Island. Go for a run / walk / picnic.
3:10 Return ferry depart Somes Island (arrives Queens Wharf 3:30)
There is a later return ferry option that departs Somes Island at 4:15 (arrives Queens Wharf at 4:25) if people want to stay later
Fares (Somes Island return):
Adult: $23
Student: $19
Child (3-15): $12
Family: $67
