Sunday, 22 Jan 2006, 09:00: Tussock Traverse
Tussock Traverse hits the Tongariro National Park

For the first time ever, the opportunity is offered to people who love the outdoors to participate in the Tussock Traverse. This half mountain marathon fun run or walk is being held on the 22nd of January 2006 and a unique chance to get out and enjoy 21.5km of amazing scenery in the centre of the North Island, from the Rangipo Desert to Whakapapa Village. The course traverses between Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngaruahoe, past the historic Waihohonu Hut, covering part of the beautiful Round the Mountain track.

Set at fairly low altitude, the course is designed to appeal to entrants of varying ability, whether you are an elite mountain runner, a regular half marathon competitor or would prefer a fun walk.

Organised by the Tongariro Natural History Society, a non-profit organization, all proceeds from the event go towards conservation projects in the Tongariro National Park. The Society has organized a band of volunteers to run the event, providing lots of support for everyone on the day.

Great spot prizes have been donated and a prizegiving at the end of the day will be held at the Tussock Bar in Whakapapa Village. This is your chance to add this unique new course to your list of half marathon events to achieve. And just by participating, you will have done your bit to help this spectacular World Heritage National Park. Why not check out www.tongariro.org.nz for more details and an entry form, email info@tongariro.org.nz or telephone (07) 386 6499 for more information.

As this is the first time this event has been held, numbers are limited to 200 entrants. Be in early to secure your place in this unique event!
