Event results
A fantastic day for this 36km trail race; blue skies, little if any wind and stunning scenery from start to finish. The day started with a brief coach ride from the event centre at Marahau to Kaiteriteri to catch the ferries to the Awaroa race start. After an hour on the boats watching the hills about to be run on pass by, the morning chill had gone off the air. A short walk to the start line and at 9:30 the horn was sounded so everyone could run back again. The first opportunity for wet feet was at about 500m just in time for the first climb of the day. Back down to sea level for a calf deep splash in the sea at about the 6km mark followed by a 1/2km beach run ensured everyone had a bit of sand in their shoes at the first aid station. The up and down again pattern follows for the rest of the run course which is over an excellent DOC track with fantastic views popping up all the way to the finish. Lunch and a full prize giving dinner are provided and lots of spot prizes awarded.
For Olympic, Tineke Hooft was 3rd MW50 in 4:04:23, Gary Dick was 2nd MM60 in 3:24:51 and Malcolm Standrill was 9th MM50 in 3:57:48. Sadly Annie Van Herck was unable to start due to recent illness.
