The following Olympic athletes represented Wellington at the Grade 12-13 Interprovincials in Inglewood over the Easter weekend:
Karl Brownlie, 12 Boys
Amelia Harris, 12 Girls
Jess Kerr, 12 Girls
Phoebe Anderson, 12 Girls
Kate Ohlson-Thwaites, 13 Girls
At the Interprovincials, all athletes compete in four events and are awarded points based on the times they run or distances they throw or jump. If an athlete is competing in track events they have to compete in one field event as well, or vice versa. Wellington finished an impressive 3rd out of the 10 regions competing from all over New Zealand. The 12 boys’ team finished 1st in their grade and the 12 girls’ finished 2nd behind Canterbury. Canterbury won the event overall, with Auckland second. All our Olympic athletes who competed came away with PBs. It was a fantastic event with the top athletes in these age groups from around New Zealand. All events are straight finals, so final placings are decided on the times run or distances thrown etc in each division. Jess Kerr got three PBs winning the 800m (2.26.33), placing 4th in the 1500m (5.05.80) and 12th in the 400m (66.29). She also threw a PB in her field event which was the discus. She ended up 5th overall for points (only 20 points off 3rd ). Amelia Harris had the most amazing finishes in each of her races. It was a real highlight of the meet watching her storming down the finish line passing everyone to win her divisions of the 800m (2.30.74) and 1500m (5.02.21). On times she ended up 3rd overall for the 1500m which was a PB as well, and she placed 5th in the 800m overall. Her 400m time (65.60) was also impressive and she came 10th overall for this event. In the same age group Phoebe Anderson who runs for Olympic in the cross country season ran a brilliant 400m (64.87) to win her division, ending up 6th fastest in that event in 64 seconds which was a PB too. She also finished 8th in the 1500m (5.10.05) and 12th in the 800m (2.34.31). Karl Brownlie was part of an exceptional 12 boys’ team. He had a very impressive two days coming away with three PBs in total. In the 1500m he ran under 5 minutes for the first time (4.55.27) and beat his previous 800m time by a second (2.24). He came 7th overall in his 1500m and 8th overall in his 800m. He also got a PB in 400m running it in a time of 65 secs. Kate Ohlson-Thwaites came away with a PB in her 400m race in the 13 girls’ division with a time of 64.81. In her 200m she ran a 29.22. She had to throw a discus and shot put for her third and fourth events – so got some last minute training in for this and did really well, especially with the discus throwing 20.87m.
All in all it was a fantastic weekend, and one that all our younger athletes should work towards for the future. They're already talking about how strong the team will be in 2012 with Josh Nairne, Oscar Harris, Maddy Wilson, Kayla Walker and Roshani Thuraisingham coming through. Plus Liam Kennedy who was selected for the 12 boys this year but who had to withdraw due to injury will make the boys team even better. The 2012 Interprovincials will be held in Auckland over Easter next year. (Race report by Jo Murray)
