Good day’s racing was had by all, weather was four seasons in one day - managed to get sunburned and rained on during the race. Plenty of Olympic singlets there again this year.
The race was convincingly won by local mountain runner and multi-sporter 27-year-old Chris Morrissey (a previous junior winner). Mike Wakelin and Barry Prosser had a sprint finish across the line to finish 2nd and 3rd (Barry was first Master). Barry led Mike to the top by about a minute but he had a slow descent and went off course slightly somewhere near the top, which let Mike catch him up by halfway down the mountain. Barry went a bit early on the flat home run and couldn’t hold Mike off when he came back at him just before the finish line. Their times were about 65mins.
Moana Burt had a brilliant run - 5th across the line and first woman (time unknown). Hard to compare times from year to year because the conditions always vary. Lyndon McGaughran (running against his coach’s orders) also ran well to finish first junior in 1hr 12mins. Barry, Moana and Lyndon all get trips to Australia next July.
Robbie Gould (WHAC) completed the race in about 1 hr 19mins.
Barbara Prosser and Alana Prosser competed in the recreation section. Barbara was 2nd Masters Women.
