Wellington Junior Champs Day 1, Newtown Park Sunday, 7 March 2010

The first day of the Wellington Junior Track and Field Champs was held at Newtown Park on Sunday 7 March.

We had some excellent results on the first day of the champs with a number of athletes achieving personal bests as well as medals. Cayden Teau a new member at our club set a Wellington record in the 8 year old boys shot put with 7.49m (the record had been 7.24m). Karl Brownlie (11 Boys 1500m), Eden Cruise (10 Boys 1500m) and Susannah Lynch (13 Girls 800m) all ran brilliantly to win gold medals in their races, each of them achieving personal bests as well. Eden Cruise had a great day winning four medals in the 10 year old boys’ age group - 1500m (gold), medley (gold), 400m (bronze) and shot put (bronze). Rose Lovell in her first season at athletics won gold in the 7 year old girls 200m and a silver in the 60m. Blaine Abbiss (100m) and Grace Ohlsson (60m) won silver medals in their races in their 8 year old age group. Kushla Smith came 3rd in her 200m race in the same age group. Amelia Kerr came 2nd in the 9 year old girls’ discus with a throw of 18.18m. Unfortunately Emerson Yee, who has had an outstanding interclub season in the 9 year old girls age group winning all her running and long jump events, dislocated her toe the day before the Wellington Champs. Very disappointing for her but we know she’ll be back stronger than ever next season! Roshani Thuraisingham finished strongly to come 2nd in the 10 year old 800m.

James Palmer jumped very well in long jump to finish 3rd in the 12 year old boys. Jess Kerr came 3rd in the 11 year old girls 800m getting beaten at the very end after leading the whole way. Adam Preston ran very well in the 11 year old boys 800m to win a bronze medal with Oliver Wood just missing out on a medal coming in 4th. Each of these boys, including Karl Brownlie who won this event ran personal bests. It was impressive to see so many Olympic singlets in one race, with Ulrich Smit who’s just joined our club finishing 6th as well. Madeline Wilson who runs for Onslow in the summer, but trains with us throughout the year, came 1st in the 10 year old girls 800m.

Olympic finished day one on a high with the 10 year old and 11 year old distance medley teams winning gold. The winning teams were:

11 Year Olds: Karl Brownlie (800m), Jess Kerr (400m), Adam Preston (200m), Annese Wolff and Amelia Harris (100m each).

10 Year Olds: Eden Cruise (800m), Roshani Thuraisingham (400m), Kyle Preston (200m) and Danielle Watson and Oscar Harris (100m each)
