Olympic had three walkers competing in the unjudged 10km walking races at Trentham on Saturday morning.
Andrea Adams put up a stirling performance knocking out 7 1/4 minute kilometres for the first 6km before slipping back to around 7 1/2m for the remainder. I am told that her total time of 1:13:28, earning her 5th place, may be a personal best. Great effort.
Colleen Singleton and Paula Binkhorst clocked identical times for the first 7km. Then, with 3km to go they started to put the hammer down and Colleen opened a gap of 8s at 8km, bravely held by Paula to 13s at 9km but then growing to almost a minute at the finish line.
Looking at the split times, we can see that Andrea will have lapped the others at around the place where her pace dropped a little. Perhaps her work was done? On the other side of the coin the sight of Andrea disappearing ahead could be what spiced up the pace for Colleen & Paula. There's nothing quite like a little rivalry to help things along in a race.
