1st Masters Women
The 8th Wainuiomata Mountain Run and Walk started in very cool but still conditions on Sunday morning at Wise Park, in Wainuiomata. The event incorporated the Athletics Wellington Mountain Running Championships. By the time Mike Wakelin was sighted coming off the final hill before the long flat run to the finish, the sun had appeared to make the finish of the event a pleasent experience for the 50 odd runners who started at 10am and the 30 walkers who had set off earlier at 9am.

Conditions on the off road section were quite wet and muddy under foot, so Mike's winning time of 48.15 was a fine effort, breaking his own 2003 race record of 49.26. Mike was well ahead of the 2nd place runner Hamish Clareburt, (WHAC), who was the 1st Junior home in 52.37. Hamish Carson, (Kapiti) was 2nd Junior in 53.44, sprinting past Wayne Atkins, (WHAC) in the finish straight for 3rd overall. Atkins was the 2nd Senior to finish. Matthew Singleton followed another senior runner home to finish 3rd Junior and 6th overall in 55.56.

Olympic did well in the Masters' Grades with Warren Matulick winning the mens title in 57.37, while Billie Marshall won the womens title in 63.01 and was 2nd female overall.

Chris Blackford (JM) 62.21, Juan McDonald (MM) 64.53 and Janet Dobbie (MW) 85.09 were other club members taking part.

Lynne Broad and Colleen Singleton competed in the Walk. All competators completed a 12.1km course.

Three Gold Medals and therefore Wellington Champions, and a Bronze Medal was a good haul for Olympic.
