Shaw Baton is upon us - entries closing soon and helpers needed 17 Apr 2017.

Shaw Baton Relays, Battle Hill Pauhatahanui,  Sat 22 April

Newsletter is early this week because the sign up for the Shaw Baton relays closes off at midnight on Tuesday 18th.  Yes, that is today on the calendar, so if you haven't yet signed up do it NOW!

Register your entry and any any others from your family, using our web portal.  There is no fee, but we do need to get all the names in so we can sort out teams.

Also vital is to sign up to help on the day.  We all need to pitch in, as it is part of supporting the running community, and also provides funds for the club.  There is a job for everyone - including partners or parents of those actually in the races, and there are options to help with baking and BBQ supplies if you can't be there on the day.  Sign-up to help here: - http://bit.ly/2pecfe5

The Shaw Baton relays are the first big interclub race of the season.  They have been organised by Olympic since the 1920s!  It is a relay race with teams bolting around a 2km course out at Battle Hill in Pauhatahanui.  It is a fun day out with the feel of a medieval joust when you see all the tents and flags set out and the competitors doing battle around the course.

Time to register for Harriers Membership

While there is no fee for the Shaw Baton, it is time to formally join (and pay for) the winter season with Olympic. https://memberdesq.onesporttechnology.com/3228/org    If you are still trying the club out for the first time there is no drama about leaving it a while as the due date is 1 May but the start of the season tends to be a time for money going out, so good to have some coming in too!  For your money you get entry to all the club and interclub races for the season and of course the chance to socialise at the clubrooms after runs.  The web has details of the fees and discounts for families etc.

Junior Walking Race - 21 May

Olympic has two out of a team of four boys or girls between 8 and 14 entered for the Central North Island Junior Race Walking Relay -- we need two more!

Jonno Plant (021 048 5785) has offered to manage the team and will have a tent/gazebo there on the day, so give him a call if you are interested.  It's a fun event so not the usual strict officiating and we are going to organise a couple of training sessions for anyone who wants to try.

Next Runs

22 April: Shaw Baton Relay, Battle Hill - our club's classic relay race to start the inter-club competition.

29 April: Pack run from the clubrooms

Sundays 8:30am: A group of keen runners go for a longer run, usually around 5 min/km pace.    Watch https://www.facebook.com/groups/797068523644426/ where they co-ordinate locations and transport etc

Social Contacts

  • There are a couple of active Facebook pages associated with the club.  If memory serves you need to be accepted to get access but that is not a big hassle.  A variety of semi organised runs at different levels, encouragement for summer track athletes, and celebrations of current (and some past) performances all turn up regularly.
