Athletics Wellington Selection Policy 2014 5 May 2014.
Below is Athletics Wellington's Cross Country & Road Committee selection policy for national events for this year. Note the requirement to register your interest. If you are even remotely interested in competing you should register.
Introduction
Athletics Wellington will select teams to represent the Centre at the:
Selection policy
The key objective is to send competitive teams to these events, where possible. To enable this, the aim is to select:
NIXC: A team of 5 athletes in the SM grade and a team of 3 athletes in all other grades (SW, M19, W19, M16, W16, M35, M50, MW). Additional athletes (up to 3 in each grade) may also be selected where they have demonstrated an ability to finish in the top half of their race.
NZXC / NZ Road: A counting team of 6 athletes in the SM grade, and a counting team of 4 athletes in all other championship grades (SW, M19, W19, M16, W16, M35, M50, MW), where possible. Additional athletes (up to 4 in each grade) may also be selected where they have demonstrated an ability to finish in the top half of their race.
Athletes will be selected based on form in 2014 winter interclub competition. An athlete who has not competed in 2014 interclub, but has proven ability from 2013, will only be considered for selection if there remains a position in the team after all athletes that have competed in 2014 have been considered.
Notice of intention
Athletes wishing to be considered for selection must notify the Selectors of the events they wish to be considered for at least two days prior to the relevant selection date, by completing the online Expression of Interest form: http://goo.gl/PGTIWm
If an athlete subsequently becomes unavailable, the athlete must notify the Selectors immediately.
If an athlete does not make themselves available for selection in the Athletics Wellington team for an event, they will not be able to compete in that event.
No athlete will be considered for selection if they are not recorded on the ANZ membership database as a current member of an Athletics Wellington club.
Selections
Selections will be made on the following dates:
Athlete Agreement / Consent
On selection, the Team Manager will give the athlete a copy of the Athlete Agreement and Consent form. The athlete must complete, sign and return the form to the Team Manager.

- North Island Cross Country Champs to be held in Taupo on 5 July 2014
- Athletics NZ XC Champs to be held in Christchurch on 9 August 2014
- Athletics NZ Road Champs to be held in Tauranga on 6 September 2014

- Following the Dorne Cup on 14 June 2014:
- The North Island Cross Country Team
- For the NZXC: up to a maximum of 4 in each grade (6 for SM), being athletes which have:
- Positively communicated to the selectors a desire to perform to the best of their ability in the NZXC, and
- Demonstrated the ability to comfortably finish in the top half of their race at the NZXC based on performances in winter interclub competition in 2014.
Athletes selected after the Dorne Cup for NZXC are expected to demonstrate fitness by racing in the Wellington XC Championships.
- Following the Wellington XC Championships on 19 July 2014:
- The balance of the NZXC team
- For the NZ Road Champs: up to a maximum of 4 in each grade (6 for SM), being athletes which have:
- Positively communicated to the selectors a desire to perform to the best of their ability in the NZ Road Champs, and
- Demonstrated the ability to comfortably finish in the top half of their race at the NZ Road Champs based on performances in winter interclub competition in 2014.
Athletes selected after the Wellington XC Champs for the NZ Road Champs are expected to demonstrate fitness by racing in the Wellington Road Championships.
Following the Wellington Road Championships, the balance of the NZ Road Champs team will be selected. - If a selected athlete withdraws from the team, the selectors may replace that athlete at any time.
Athlete Agreement / Consent
On selection, the Team Manager will give the athlete a copy of the Athlete Agreement and Consent form. The athlete must complete, sign and return the form to the Team Manager.
Subsidies
Selected athletes will receive the following subsidies from Athletics Wellington:
- Reimbursement (via their club) of the standard entry fees
- NZXC / NZ Road: free ground transportation in Christchurch / Tauranga, and one night accommodation at Athletics Wellington’s motel.
