First races for the season: Maiden and Perston 13 Apr 2012.

The Maiden and Perston races are our first races for the season, held in just over a week's time (Saturday 21st at 2pm) at the bottom field of Newlands College.

These are club races and are a great introduction to cross country. They are 2km long and are mostly grass, with some asphalt and forest included.

The Maiden Race is for members who have never won an individual trophy in a club or interclub (or other) race, won on either handicap (1st place) or outright. In many cases, new members will start in this event. The Perston Memorial Race is for members who have won an individual race.

Both races are sealed handicap, which means the club handicapper (Mark Handley) works out what time he thinks everybody will run, and seals those times in an envelope so that nobody knows what they are. The person in each race who beats their handicap time by the greatest margin is the handicap winner. Anybody can win the handicap trophies!

There are trophies for fastest times, first female and handicap winner in each race. These races go back to the earliest days of Olympic Harriers -- the trophies are nearly as old and are worth winning!

There are also two races for the younger runners: a 800m race on the grass for the 7s and under, and a 1km race for the older kids.

And don't forget this is one of our afternoon tea events (back at the clubrooms afterwards), so please bring a plate!
