Round the Rock Relay Team
(Della missing)
As you may be aware a team of Olympic members headed over to Rarotonga to compete in the week of running held from 28 September to 5 October.

The first event on the calendar was a 5k warm up and meet and greet themed "go Tropo" at least 2 of us wore Tropical shirts and all of us got very sweaty. Next was the round Raro race itself (this was our big one) 31k right round the island, thankfully run in the cooler morning (5.30am start). I was happy to run 4th overall and take home a medal (work of art) for 1st man 40-49, Juan McDonald took second man 40-49 at 6th overall. A few of us did struggle with that event though, I shall let everyone tell you there own stories when they return. Donna and Matt did the 10k event on the same day (7.30am start).

Monday was the local "Hash House Harriers" (Hussies and Hoffspring) birthday run which was an experience, we all ran in pareu (sarongs - see the photo).

Tuesday was the big event for the Rarotongans who all (400 of them anyway) joined in for the Round the Rock Relay. This was quite a colourful event with various interpretations of the rules and strategies in evidence. We managed to convince two Scottish Harriers, Della and Matyas to wear the black singlets (they looked very fine too!) as the 31k had taken it's toll on a number of us. Barry, who had been itching for a run, also chipped in a leg after Liam dropped a scooter on himself (I'll let him tell you that one too!). The upshot of all that was that we were, I think, the only team to follow the rules so we took out 4th overall and the 1st 10 person team trophy (a magnificent Tangaroa - you need to see him!)Click to enlarge

Birthday Run

After all that we still had the Nutters Run to do (yes you guessed it - bush bashing over the island). Juan and I after planning to stick with the locals in the bush and then stick it to them on the road on the other side, came unstuck when we lost them in the bush and instead of taking their short cut actually followed the course and subsequently lost 5 minutes going the long way. we even got passed by another local and ended up 4th and 5th. The replies to "how was that?" for this one ranged from "that was awefull" to "great fun, lets go back the other way".

All in all a great trip and and some eventful experiences.
