Wyatt Second at World Mountain Trophy 12 Sep 2006.

11 September 2006

Jonathan Wyatt, the defending champion, finished second in the world mountain running championship in Bursa Turkey yesterday.

Wyatt of Wellington covered the 12,090m uphill course in 56m 22s, just six seconds behind the winner Rolando Ortiz of Colombia.

Wyatt was suffering from dog bites sustained while previewing the course two days before the championship. Wyatt was taking medication for the bites and had received five injections.

Team manager Barry Ellis said that the race ended up a sprint finish, with Ortiz just having an extra edge.

"It was a gutsy, gutsy effort from Jonathan, given what he had been through," said Ellis.

Wyatt is five times previous world champion.

Other New Zealand placings in the senior men were: Dale Warrander 27th in 1h 1m 14s, Angus Bell 59th in 1h 4m 26s, Craig Kirkwood 79th in 1h 6m 14s and Phil Costley 108th in 1h 9m 23s. New Zealand finished eighth in the teams event.

Melissa Moon of Wellington was 14th in the women's 8549m championship. The twice world champion recorded 51m 5s, four minutes behind the winner Andrea Mayr of Austria.

Nicole Rogal of North Canterbury was eighth in the junior women's 3409m in 24m 2s. Ruth Croft was 24th in 25m 53s, to give New Zealand seventh placing in the teams event.

Results still to be confirmed for Aaron Jackson in the Junior Men’s Race.
