Olympic has confirmed it's place as New Zealand's premier mountain running club with seven placings in six events at the National Mountain Running Championships held on Mt. Victoria this weekend.
To open our account Miles Coverdale won the senior mens grade in the 1 lap recreational event.
Mike Wakelin finished 2nd in the senior men's event a scant 30s behind Phil Costley of Christchurch. Brendon Blacklaws was also second in the Junior men's event with Matt Singleton a close 3rd. Samara Sheppard was third in the Junior woman's race. Barry Prosser placed 1st of the Masters Men 50-54 (2nd Masters Grade) and Sheryne Beeby was 3rd of the Masters Women 45-49 grade.
Local headlines professed surprise at Mike Wakelin's placing but we weren't surprised. Mike has made Mount Victoria his home recently and has always done well in the Vosseler shield, run over very similar tracks. His training appears to have been going well and he is keen to shine on his home turf in September at the World Trophy event.
With 3 club members confirmed (Matt Singleton was confirmed at the prizegiving)and Samara likely (unfortunately she is too young - see Murray's report), in the team for the World Trophy event he will have good support from Olympic and is sure to achieve his goals in that event.
Congratulations to you all!!!
