Saturday, 14 Aug 2021: Needle Road Relay (Wellington Relay Champs) 5 laps / 21km, Evans Bay Marina carpark (Zephyrometer) ×

The Needle Relay replaces the Bays Relay, and takes place around a central hub: the Wind Needle (Zephyrometer), situated on the corner of Cobham Drive and Evans Bay Parade. 2021 details below.

The races 

There are three distinct events, open to both registered and social members of clubs: the Walkers' Turkey Trot; the Children’s Needle Relay, and the Needle Relay. Each event starts on the footpath by the wind needle and runners and walkers remain on the footpath at ALL times and no headphones or earphones worn while competing

10:30 am: Walkers' Turkey Trot (5km walk for all ages). Walk north on the footpath besides Evans Bay Parade for 2.5km, turning around at the city end of Weka Bay. Walkers estimate their time with the winners being those closest to the estimated time. No watches or phones allowed! Enter on the day

12:00pm: Children’s Needle Relay (10-13 years of age). 4 runners per team, each running the same 1.6km lap. Teams are made up of any mix of boys and girls. 1.6km lap: Run south to east on the footpath along Cobham Drive for 0.8km, turning at the positioned marshal.

1:00pm: Needle Relay (Junior Women U20 Junior Men U20 Senior Women Senior Men Masters Women 35+ Masters Men 35+ Masters Women 50+ Masters Men 50+ Masters Men 60+ Composite/Mixed - can be mixed ages, gender, and clubs). Five runners per team, running a mix of 5km and 3km laps that total 21km. The 10 age grades run together, making for a compact and competitive day of racing.

Laps 1, 3, and 5 (5km): Run north on the footpath beside Evans Bay Parade for 2.5km, turning around at the city end of Weka Bay. Runners stay on the footpath and run around the outside of Cog Park, NOT on the limestone path through the park.

Laps 2 and 4 (3km): Run east on the footpath beside Cobham Drive for 1.5km. The turnaround is about 200m past the main airport roundabout.

  • Age grades as at 31 December 2021, except Masters where age is as at 14th August 2021.
  • All competitors, apart from those in the Children’s Relay, must be at least 14 years of age.
  • Prizegiving will be held after each event, with medals awarded to the first team in each grade.

Batons

  • Each relay team is allocated a specific baton which must be collected from the tent at Race HQ from one hour before the race start (the baton number will be independent from the bib number).
  • Batons are fitted with timing chips and must only be used by the team it has been assigned to.
  • Batons must be returned at the end of the relay in the bins provided near the start/finish area. Athletics Wellington will charge clubs for unreturned batons.

RACE RULES AND OTHER INFORMATION

The relay is organised by the Wellington Harrier Athletic Club Inc. and is held under Athletics New Zealand rules. All competitors compete at their own risk. Team captains must attend a race briefing at the start/finish area 15 minutes before the start of the race, and are responsible for ensuring all team members understand the race rules and procedures.

(a) RACE HQ:
On the grass by the Wind Needle There is limited parking available in the marina carpark by the Wind Needle. Participants and spectators are encouraged to carpool and to park in and around Kilbirnie. Toilets are available but there is no water or shelter (there is limited space for club tents on the grass area) so come prepared. First aid will be provided by Wellington Free Ambulance, stationed in the marina car park.

(b) SAFETY
Competitors must run on the footpath at ALL times, staying left as much as possible. Footpaths are open to the public so competitors must be courteous to other users. Do not step onto the road under any circumstances, including if passing another runner or members of the public. Competitors and spectators must follow all instructions from the Race Referee, Race Marshals, Police Officers and Council Officers at all times. Marshals will be posted at any points along the course where cars enter and exit, and runners must stop if directed by marshals to do so.

(c) UNIFORM
Runners must wear club uniform, with the allocated race bib worn clearly on the front of their singlet.

(d) BATON AND CHANGEOVER
All team members must run with their team’s allocated baton in their hand for the duration of their lap, before passing to the next runner within the allocated changeover zone. Next lap runners must enter the changeover area via the designated waiting pen, and only enter the changeover area once they see their incoming runner. There are two pens for the 21km relay: the city side is for runners on laps 2 and 4 and the airport side is for runners on laps 3 and 5.

(e) REPLACEMENT
If a runner cannot complete their lap, they can be replaced by another member of the team. Any replacement must be notified to officials at Race HQ. Any notified replacements will result in a 7 minute penalty, while unnotified replacements will result in team disqualification.

(f) OTHER RULES No runner may run more than one lap for any A &/or B team across all grades and races. There is to be no pacing of runners as defined in Athletics NZ Road Relay regulations, and no headphones or earphones worn while competing.

(g) PROTESTS AND APPEALS
IAAF Competition Rules 146 covers protests and appeals. Any protest must be made to the Race Referee within 30 minutes of the finish of the race. Any appeal must be made to the Race Director.

(h) PENALTIES (added to the runner’s time and the team’s overall time)

  • (i) Running on the road 2 minutes
  • (ii) Second infringement of running on the road for a team (including by Disqualification the same runner)
  • (iii) Pacing 2 minutes
  • (iv) Wearing headphones or earphones 2 minutes
  • (v) Changing baton outside change zone (added to incoming runner’s time) 1 minute
  • (vi) Notified replacement 7 minutes
  • (vii) Unnotified replacement Disqualification

(i) RACE RECORDS

  • Children’s 6.4km relay: 1.6km lap, for both boys and girls, and team total. A boy or a girl is only eligible for a lap record if the runner’s gender is specified on the team information sheet.
  • 21km relay: 3km lap, 5km lap and team total for each of the 10 grades. A runner competing for a team in another grade (for example, a W35 competing in SW team) is only eligible for the age-grade lap record if the runner’s age grade is specified on the team information sheet.

(j) COVID-19
Spectators may register their presence at the event by scanning Wellington Harrier’s event specific QR code at the Race HQ. Athletes are recorded as members of their club’s team. There are no mandatory public health requirements at alert level 1. Please remain vigilant and continue to practice good hygiene to minimise the risk of community transmission. If alert levels change, we will adopt that level’s requirements.

19 Aug update: this event has been postponed and will not be held on 21 August. A new date will be advised. 

Athletics Wellington Road Championships, incorporating Olympic Harriers Club Road Championships.

2021 details:

Location

The races are held in the Wainuiomata Recreation Area. Enter from Moores Valley Road and turn into Whitcher Grove which leads to Reservoir Road.

Course Description

An out and back road race using a 1.25km stretch of road that is closed to public traffic. There is a hill on one side and a river on the other side. The course is largely sheltered from wind. There is a grassy area for club tents close to the start/finish area. Weather conditions are usually cool at this time of year. Please be advised that members of the public are free to walk through the area, they will be advised to stay on the path beside the road. In addition, emergency vehicles, Wellington Water, and the Ranger may need to drive up the road between races, or in the case of an emergency, during a race. Competitors must make way if this is the case.

Covid-19 - Level One

  • Competitors and spectators are to stay at home if feeling unwell.
  • On arrival, spectators and competitors are encouraged to use the Covid-19 App to sign in.
  • Hygiene practices to be adhered to, washing of hands and use of hand sanitizer.
  • Competitors advised that spitting is not allowed.

Covid-19 - Level Two

Additional information and a revised race schedule will be sent out closer to the event if it looks likely
that we will be at Level 2. The races will still go ahead.

Entries

The event is open to any athlete registered in the Athletes NZ ClubNet database as “Competitive” and “Active and Financial” as at 11.59pm on Thursday 19 August 2021. Registered athletes from other centres are welcome at this event. They will need to email Daryl, daryl@fedude.co.nz by Thursday 19 August, 5:00pm. If you have already received a bib at the Vosseler, Dorne Cup or Cross Country Champs, you MUST use the same bib. Bibs will be available for collection at the Wainuiomata Harriers Truck for those people who have recently registered. Replacement bibs will be available to collect for those people who forget or have lost their bib. Allow plenty of time. Race Numbers must be worn on the front of club  singlets.

Entry Fees

Athletics Wellington clubs will be invoiced after the event for the competitors who finish: $12.00 for all competitors aged 20+, $7.50 for all competitors under 20. The entry fee for fully registered athletes from other centres will be $15 payable on the day when picking up their pre-registered temporary race bib from the Truck.

Championship Events for Masters and Seniors:

  • 10km Championship distance: SW, MW35-49, SM, MM35-49, MM50-59.
  • 5km Championship distance: MW50-59, MW60-69, MW70+, MM60-69 MM70+

Competitors Running out of Grade

Any Senior or Master runner who wishes to enter a distance other than their championship distance must email daryl@fedude.co.nz by Thursday 19 August, 5:00pm. Please send the following details; Name, Club, Race Bib Number, Grade and Distance you are running, 5km or 10km. If you are a masters runner and wish to run in a “higher” championship grade (eg. a master wishing to enter the senior race, or a W50 wishing to enter the W35 10km race), please also let Daryl know this.

Age Grades

For all grades, except Masters, ages are at 31st December 2021. For Masters’ grades, ages are age on the day.

  • U20 = 18 or 19 at end of this year.
  • U18 = 16 or 17 at end of this year.
  • U16 = 14 or 15 at end of this year.
  • U14 = 12 or 13 at end of this year.
  • U12 = 10 or 11 at end of this year.
  • U10 = 9 or younger at year end.

Teams and Medals

Open and Masters championship grades: 6 to count for Open Men. 4 to count for all other grades. Masters can count for both their club’s Masters and Open teams. Junior Grades: 3 to count for all junior age grades, WU20 and WU18 to be combined. 

Centre medals will be awarded for the first 3 registered Wellington Centre athletes in each grade. Season medals will be distributed to clubs at a later date. Medals will be given out as soon as provisional results become available. Note final results might not be available on the day of the event.

Club Tents

There is space for club tents at the start finish area. We ask that if your club is bringing a tent, that it be brought onto the course by 12:00pm.

Parking

There is parking either at the course, down by the clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park or at the end of Hine Road. Parking spaces are limited, especially if wet. Car-pooling is encouraged as is the use of the car-park at the end of Hine Road or at Richard Prouse Park if you are arriving late.

Refreshments

Refreshments will be for sale at the tent area by the start/finish line. Please bring cash.

Toilet facilities

There will be 4 portaloos at the entrance to the site. There are also toilets situated next to the clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park.

  • Race 1: 12:30pm: Junior Men U20 (7.5km - 3 loops of 2.5km); MM60-69 and 70+, MW50-59, 60-69 and 70+, WU20, WU18, MU18, men 20-59 non-championship, women 20-49 non-championship (5km - 2 loops of 2.5km)
  • Race 2: 1:10pm : Girls U10, Boys U10 (1km - 1 loop of 1km)
  • Race 3: 1:20pm: Girls U12, Boys U12 (2km - 2 loops of 1km)
  • Race 4: 1:40pm: Girls U16, Boys U16 (3.5km - 1 loop of 1km and 1 loop of 2.5km)
  • Race 5: 2:10pm: Girls U14, Boys U14 (2.5km - 1 loop of 2.5km)
  • Race 6: 2:30pm: SM, SW, MM35-49 , MW35-39, MM50-59, W50+ non-champ, M60+ non-champ (10km - 4 laps of 2.5km)

This event has been cancelled.

This combined run is hosted by Olympic. 

Come along and enjoy hanging out with a larger group of runners in a relaxed social atmostphere.
