2021 details below:

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

The venue is the same as the one used in 2019. It is based on a 2km lap which is similar to the course used for the 2019 national champs. It is a mixture of flat and undulating cross country running, and is suitable for spikes. It is likely that the course will be firm underfoot, unless there is heavy rain in the hours prior to the event in which case parts will get muddy and slippery. Each lap crosses a tarsealed road twice. The course will be marked with electrical tape, cones and flags. Competitors are to run between flags / cones, and around the outside of the tape – no cutting corners!

Beware: the Park is open to the public, so beware of the potential for spectators, members of the public and dogs to venture onto the course while you are competing. 

AGE GRADES

  • Wellington championship grades are: U10, U12, U14, U16, U18, U20, Senior, Masters 35, 50, 60 and 70.
  • Championship distance for SW, SM, MW35, MM35 and MM50 is 10km.
  • Championship distance for MW50, MW60, MM60, MW70 and MM70 is 5km.
  • For all grades except Masters, ages are at 31st December 2021. For Masters’ grades, ages are age on the day.

ENTRY AND ELIGIBILITY

The event is open to any athlete registered in the Athletes NZ ClubNet database as “Competitive” and “Active and Financial” as at 11.59pm on Friday 16 July 2021.

Competitive athletes from other centres are welcome. They are to email their entry to Daryl Bloomfield (daryl@fedude.co.nz) by 16 July and pay their $12 entry fee direct to Athletics Wellington (deposit into 031-540- 0009238-00).

Only “Competitive” members of an Athletics Wellington club will eligible for championship medals and to count in teams’ races.

ENTRY FEES

Athletics Wellington clubs will be invoiced after the event for the competitors who finish:

  • $12.00 for all competitors aged 20+
  • $7.50 for all competitors under 20.

RUNNERS COMPETING OUT OF GRADE

Any competitor who want to compete out of grade must notify Daryl Bloomfield (daryl@fedude.co.nz) by Friday 16 July.

RACE UNIFORM AND NUMBERS

All competitors must wear their official club uniform and their Athletics Wellington race bib (as issued for the Dorne Cup and Vosseler Shield) on the front of their uniform.

If you have misplaced / lost your race bib, please see Daryl Bloomfield on race day for a temporary bib (which must be returned after your race).

TEAM RACES

There are team races for each championship grade, except Seniors where the team race will be Open (first 6 from each club in the 10km race to count for the Men, who will compete for the White & Mackay Shield, and first 4 from each club in the 10km race to count for the Women).

Counting Individuals for teams:

First six from each club to count for Open Men and four for all other grades.

MEDALS

Athletics Wellington championship medals are awarded for the first three registered Wellington athletes in each grade. These medals will be presented at the Soundshell as soon as possible after each race.

Interclub cross country races for registered athletes only. 

Race Eligibility:
The Dorne Cup races are an Athletics New Zealand Sanctioned Event. Only Athletics NZ registered athletes who are financial members are eligible to compete.
Athletes must be financial in ClubNet by the end of Friday 11 June 2021 in order to compete.

Age Grades and Club Uniform:
Age at 31st December 2021, except Masters grades where it's the age on the day. 

As this event is only open to Registered Club Members, the correct club uniform must be worn.

Any athletes who wish to compete in out of grade (e.g. WU20 competing as Open Women, W35+ competing as Open Women, M50+ competing as Open Men) must declare by email to the Race Director and Daryl Bloomfield by 11 June.

Athletes must uplift their race bib from race HQ at least 30 minutes prior to the start of their race. Their race bib must be worn on the front of their club singlet. Their timing chips must be left securely on the reverse of the bibs. No bib or timing chips means you will not be recorded in the results.  Avoid the long queues by arriving at Trentham Memorial Parks early. Race HQ is open from 11:30am.

Location: The races are held in Trentham Memorial Park, Trentham.  Enter from Barton Avenue (off Fergusson Drive).  Race headquarters will be located inside the Park adjacent to the Pavilion near the Trentham United Harrier Club Rooms.

Course Description
A flat cross-country event around the picturesque Trentham Memorial Park and the Hutt River stop banks.  The course is suitable for spikes.  An Athletics New Zealand sanctioned event.

Protests and Appeals:
IAAF Competition Rules 146 covers protests and appeals.  In the first instance, any protest must be made to the Race Referee, within 30 minutes of the finish of the race. Referee’s decision will be given to the Race Director. Any appeal must be made to the Race Director.

Safety

Marshals
Marshals are clearly identifiable with orange or yellow Hi-Viz vests around the course. If you are injured or observe an injury or problem of any kind please report to the nearest marshal. All competitors must obey the directions of marshals.

No Earbuds or Audio Devices
Under IAAF Rule 144 (3)(b) competitors are not allowed to be in possession of or use video recorders, radios, CDs, radio transmitters, mobile phones or similar devices (e.g. iPods/MP3 players) in the competition area.  Such equipment is considered as giving assistance to athletes and also creates a H&S hazard as athletes must be able to hear directions given to them during their race by Marshals and other Officials.

Course Markings:
The course will be marked with a combination of the following; tape, marker poles, arrows, cones and marshals. Where 2 marker poles are placed as a gate, runners must run between the marker poles. Where 1 marker pole is used, runners must run within 5m either side of the marker pole. . Failure to follow the correct course may result in disqualification.

Teams Awards
The first four runners from each club in all grades, except Open Men, will count towards the Teams Awards.

The first six runners from each club in Race 6 will count towards the Open Men’s Teams Award, with the winning team being awarded the Dorne Cup.

An Open Men’s team may comprise Seniors, Masters 35+, 40+, and 50+.  An Open Women’s team may comprise Masters 35+, 50+ and 60+

Masters who make up an Open Men’s /Women’s team who have run out of grade as a SM or SW do not also qualify for their respective Masters Men team awards, otherwise Masters who make up the Open team will also count towards their respective Masters Grade team.

Individual Awards

Medals will be award to the first three place-getters in each grade.

Individual Masters who, with the exception of those who run out of grade, make up an Open team will qualify for the individual medals in their respective age grade.

1.00pm (6km): Masters Women (35+), Masters Women (50+), Open Women (SW), Masters Men (60+), Masters Men (70), Masters Women (60+).

1.20pm (4km): Men Under 20 (MU20), Women Under 20 (WU20), Men Under 18 (MU18), Women Under 18 (WU18).

1:45pm (2km): Boys Under 12 (BU12), Girls Under 12 (GU12)

2.00pm (2km): Boys Under 14 (BU14), Girls Under 14 (GU14)

2.15pm (3km): Boys Under 16 (BU16), Girls Under 16  (GU15)

2.30pm (1km): Boys Under 10 (BU10), Girls Under 10 (GU10)

2.45pm (8k): Open Men (SM), Masters Men 35+ & Masters Men 50+

Courses:

This year’s course remains the same as previous years. The 2km loop will run past Barton’s Bush and go across and around the Children’s soccer fields, before turning towards the Cricket Nets and then finish along the straight in beside the carpark, back up to the start line at the Pavilion.

The 4km loop will now travel through Barton’s bush and weave between the senior and kids’ rugby fields, before travelling through a second bush track which emerges by the axeman’s grounds. Runners will cross the bridge over the stream and do a short dogleg before crossing through the stream by Cricket nets and then follow the straight back to the start line.

The course bush tracks are compacted gravel, while the remainder of the course is on grass.  There are a few road crossings.  Where we can, these will have carpet laid across the seal.

Sunday, 6 Jun 2021, 06:30 to 14:00: Aurora Harriers Handicap Marathon, Upper Hutt

Also includes 2× half marathon and 4× quarter marathon relays.

The relays are over the full Marathon course, with lap changes at approx. 1⁄4, 1⁄2, & 3⁄4 waypoints.

Start times for all events are based on the handicapper’s estimate of the time you will take to complete your chosen event by 2.00pm. All competitors have a reasonable chance to take line honours.

In addition to the designated merit prizes in the handicap section, merit prizes will be awarded for fastest times in the marathon.

There will be a three person Full Marathon team trophy.

And a good range of spot prizes will be available to all participants who attend the prize-giving. (Some exclusions may apply).

All entrants who complete the course will receive a certificate of achievement.

Open handicap cross country races. This event commemorates our first club president, who died while in office, as well as a number of club members who died in the First World War.

Former club members are invited to join us. This year, we will be joined by Hutt Valley Harriers.

This race will be followed by afternoon tea at the clubrooms - please bring a plate to share.

1.30pm: Boys & Girls 9 and Under (1km scratch race), Boys & Girls 13 and Under (2km scratch race)

2.00pm-ish: Walkers;
Senior Women, Masters Women, Junior Women (W-U18 & W-U20), Junior Men (M-U18 & M-U20) (4km open handicap);
Senior Men & Masters Men (8km open handicap)

(Both handicap races – 4km and 8km – will be run concurrently with one finish time.)

Sunday, 23 May 2021, 10:00: Masters Classic Relay, Trentham Memorial Park

This is a great 5-lap relay race, traditionally for the more senior members of the club. It's mostly on flat grass at Trentham Memorial Park (saves our somewhat older joints a bit). Categories/prizes for men, women, mixed, teams with aggregate ages of 250 and 300 or more. There is a walkers event too which covers 3 laps of the 4km course as opposed to 5 laps for runners. The event has a ‘pre-vet’ category which allows teams to have a member in the 30-34 yr age group and also an open category for teams with members less than 30 yrs of age. So basically it’s an all comers event.

Race headquarters are at the WHAC Clubrooms, 164 Alexandra Rd. All races start on the grassed area near the Badminton Hall on Ruahine St

Course description

All races start with a steep uphill from Badminton Hall up to the tracks just below Alexandra Road; the course covers bush tracks and rocky trails with steep uphill / downhill gradients. The entire race is off road with the exception of road crossings on Mt Victoria.  

There are 5 races run over four distances ranging from 1.6km for boys and girls to 10km for senior and masters’ runners.  Road crossings are marshalled and subject to Traffic Management controls.

Entry information

Athletics New Zealand Sanctioned Event
Only Athletics NZ registered athletes who are financial full competition members in the ANZ ClubNet database are eligible to compete. Athletes must be financial in ClubNet by midnight Wednesday 19 May 2021 in order to compete. 

Race bibs
You must be financial in ANZ ClubNet as stated above to receive a race bib. If you are financial by Friday 14 May, you will receive a personalised race bib. If you are financial after 14 May and up to 20 May, you will receive a temporary race bib, which must be returned after the race. Race bib pick up at the WHAC clubrooms on race day 22 May from 11:30am. No postal or email entries from AW Clubs.  
 
Other clubs to email entries to the race director by 19 May. Athletes must collect their race bib from their club representative at the WHAC clubrooms at least 30 minutes prior to the start of their race. No current bib and timing chip means you will not be recorded in the results. Race bibs will again be used for each of the 4 interclub races. The bibs will have Athletics Wellington timing chips and must be worn on the front of the athlete’s club singlet. Timing chips must be left securely on the front of the bibs.  
 
Entry Fees (Athletics Wellington Members)
AW Clubs will be invoiced after the event according to the number of individuals completing the races. 
 
Entry fees for ANZ Registered Club Members are as follows:

  • Boys and Girls U12, U14 and U16   $25.50
  • All other grades    $30.00

These entry fees include a special traffic management fee of $18.00 per person. 

Age Grades and Club Uniform
Age on 31st December 2021; except Masters’ grades where age on 22nd May 2021. 
 
As this event is only open to Registered Club Members, the correct club uniform must be worn.  
 
Any athlete wishing to compete “out of grade” (e.g. junior in senior grade), must advise the Race Director, Ian Macfarlane whacracedirector@gmail.com  and Daryl Bloomfield daryl@fedude.co.nz by 5:00pm Thursday 20 May.  

Team and individual awards

Medals will be awarded to FIRST PLACE in each grade, (*except there will be no medals for non-championship races). 
 
Team Competition winners will receive medals, with number to count in each grade as follows:

  • Open Men M20-99 10k only: 6
  • Open Women W20-99 5k only: 3
  • Masters Women MW50/60/70 combined: 3
  • Junior Women WU20/WU18 combined: 3
  • All other grades      3 

Masters’ runners are eligible for team competition in both the Open grade and their own Masters’ grade. 

The Barry Everitt Plate will be awarded to the Club scoring the highest number of points over all grades. This will be based on participation, where every competitor will score points, with 100 points to the winner. E.g., Senior Women, 30 finishers, first place scores 100 points, last place scores 71 points. (The non-championship races will not count towards this Club competition).  

Prize giving

Prize giving, following each race, will be near the WHAC Clubrooms; and if bad weather, will be held inside.

Health and safety

Public Roads
The race includes the crossing of public roads. Marshals will be in place for your safety and will endeavour to stop vehicles in order to provide right of way to runners. However, you must remain alert at road crossings, look yourself, and be prepared to stop if directed to do so by a marshal. Where the course runs alongside public roads, competitors must run within the coned off verge area. 
 
Course Conditions
This is a cross country race and accordingly trails may be loose, steep, slippery, uneven, and have trip hazards. Competitors are responsible for taking reasonable care. 
 
Wellington Free Ambulance
Wellington Free Ambulance service will be on site throughout the event; the ambulance and medics will be situated at the clubrooms. Sector Marshals and Race Director have contact details in case of an emergency event on the course.  
 
COVID-19 
Spectators are to register their presence by scanning at the event specific QR code at the Race HQ OR near the start line. Athletes are recorded as members of their club’s team. There are no mandatory public health requirements at alert level 1. Please remain vigilant and continue to practice good hygiene to minimise the risk of community transmission; hand sanitiser will be available at Race HQ; practice social distancing where possible; and please stay away from the event if you are unwell. 
 
The event will only be run under Alert level 1.

Athletics Wellington Junior Commitee invites athletes to take part in a low-key but fun cross-country race to be held at Trentham Memorial Park on Sunday 9 May. The races are open to Primary School athletes in years 3 to 8.  All are welcome, including those who are not currently members of an athletics club.

  • Registration Desk will open at 9:00am
  • ALL runners MUST report to the Registration Desk prior to your scheduled race start time in order for your Race Identity Number to be written on your arm.
  • Please allow at least 20 minutes as we are expecting large numbers.
  • Please be at the Marshalling Point area 5-10 mins before your scheduled race time so a light warm-up can be done.
  • Race start times will be as close as possible to the scheduled time. The programme will NOT run forward.

The Victoria University Athletic Club invites us to the Victoria University Relay events being held at QE Park on Saturday 8 May. Registered athletes and social members of clubs are eligible to compete in the following events: 

1. The Whittaker’s Chocolate Walk – open to walkers of all ages. Distance of approximately 6 km. Walkers must estimate their time with the winners being the walkers who are closest to their estimated time. Prizes for first female and first male.  

2. The Boys & Girls Races – scratch races for athletes under 16 years of age, and a fun run for the under 7’s. Athletes 16 years and older run in the junior relay. Prize giving  for the scratch races will be held shortly after the under 7’s fun run, just before the start of the relay. In a change from 2020, this year U14 and U16 events will run together.

***Age is taken as at 31 December 2021*** 

3. The Victoria University Relay – 10 grades with 4 runners per team over an  approx. 3.5 km lap.

12:00 PM Chocolate Walk: 6 km walk on the road; 11.30 registration, 12 noon start

1:15 PM B&G U10: 1.2 km: the start is over the sandhills to the south of the main start/finish area

1:30 PM B&G U12: 2 km loop from the start/finish area

1.45 PM B&G U14 & U16: 2 km loop from the start/finish area

2:00 PM B&G U7: 500 metres fun run “out and back” from the start/finish area

2:30 PM University relay.  Ten grades: junior women U20, Junior men U20,  Senior women, Senior men, Masters women 35+, Masters men 35+, Masters women 50+, Masters men 50+, Open 60+. Four runners per team, 3.5 km lap. All grades start together. Open 60+ teams can comprise men and women in the same team. Mixed teams can comprise athletes of mixed ages and genders (results in the grade will be recorded but there will be no prizes awarded) Prizes will be awarded to the winning team in each grade with the prize-giving to start as soon as the final runner completes the event

PLEASE NOTE: age is taken as of 31 December 2021 or, in the case of Masters, age on the day of the event. 

Electronic Timing Batons and Changeover:

  • Team members must run with the baton in their hand
  • Next lap runners must enter the changeover area via the side access chute, NOT VIA THE START/FINISH CHUTE
  • Baton changeover must take place WITHIN the allocated changeover zone

NOTE: ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS ARE PERMITTED  ON THE FARM AREA OF QE PARK EITHER LOOSE, ON LEADS OR IN CARS SO PLEASE LEAVE YOUR CANINES AT HOME! 

Entries, fees, rules and other information: 

  1. Team relay entries must be submitted online by club officials via the online link (this link will be provided in the week before the event). Entries will close 11.59 pm Thursday 6 May. 
  2. There is no need to pre-enter athletes in the Chocolate Walk or in the Boy’s and Girl’s Races. 
  3. Relay teams who wish to compete in the Senior grade rather than their age grade must declare their intention to do so in writing to the Race Manager prior to the start of the relay
  4. Clubs will be invoiced for entry fees after the event: $4 per walker, $4 for kids in the Boy’s & Girl’s Races, $40 per team in the Junior relay grades, $48 per team in the Senior/Masters/Mixed relay grades. No entry fee for the U10 and U7 events. 
  5. Runners must wear club uniform with the team race bib as allocated by your club on the front of singlet. 
  6. Runners must follow all instructions from marshals and Wellington Centre officials.
  7. The course will be marked with a combination of tape, marker poles, arrows, cones and marshals. Where 2 marker poles are placed as a gate, runners must run between the marker poles. Where 1 marker pole is used, runners must run within 5m on either side of the marker pole. Failure to comply with a marshal’s instruction or not following the correct course may cause disqualification. 
  8. Protests and Appeals: IAAF Competition Rules 146 covers protests and appeals. In the  first instance, any protest must be made to the Race Referee within 30 minutes of the finish of the race.  
  9. If a runner cannot complete their lap, they can be replaced by another member of the  team, but this will incur a 7 minute time penalty. 
  10. The course is not suitable for bare foot running; runners who run in bare feet do at their own risk. 
  11. First aid is available at the Race HQ tent which is adjacent to the start/finish.
  12. There is no water available and no shelter (unless provided by your club tent) so come prepared. 
  13. Please take caution when driving in the paddock and especially watch out for kids.

Venue 

Battle Hill Farm Park – Pauatahanui, Paekakariki Hill Rd, Porirua, Wellington. (6km north of Pauatahanui General Store).

Distance

2km laps - cross-country

Course

Grass, gravel tracks, mostly flat to undulating with one sharp uphill and downhill. Log jumps and a water jump. Course marked with red and white flags. Go through ‘gate’ when two flags are set together or up to 5 metres either side if flags set alone. Failing to follow correct course may result in disqualification.

  3. Please use timing batons provided by the race host.
  4. Club teams to wear race letter/numbers as allocated by your club on the front of singlet. Visiting teams please indicate race number to be used on the entry form.
  5. Non-club teams will need to supply letters and/or numbers for respective teams. 
  6. No runner may run more than one lap for any A and/or B team across all grades and races.
  7. Next lap runners must enter the start line from the side access, NOT VIA FINISH CHUTE where runners are finishing.
  8. First Aid available. 
  9. Toilets available, no changing facilities, come prepared.
  10. ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS ARE PERMITTED AT BATTLE HILL FARM PARK
  11. Results will be posted on our results page.
