Instead of a club run, we are encouraging all members - juniors, seniors and masters - to join in the Wellington Mountain Running Champs.

We won Queen Club of the Mountain title last year, and our kids won us the Prince and Princesses Club of the Mountain Title. Let's see if we can get the men's title back!

This is also a great chance to support Wainui Harriers - another small club with an awesome supportive social feel.

Olympic hosts this event. We ask that all club members assist with setting up the course and running the event, as their run times permit.

Venue 

Battle Hill Farm Park – Pauatahanui, Paekakariki Hill Rd, Porirua, Wellington. (6km north of Pauatahanui General Store).

Distance

2km laps - cross-country

Course

Grass, gravel tracks, mostly flat to undulating with one sharp uphill and downhill. Log jumps and a water jump. Course marked with red and white flags. Go through ‘gate’ when two flags are set together or up to 5 metres either side if flags set alone. Failing to follow correct course may result in disqualification.

The Relays are open to teams from Schools, Colleges and Recreation Runners who are welcome to enter in age/gender grades as above.

Entry protocols – race rules

  1. Please use the team recording sheet provided by the race host.
  2. Club teams to wear race letter/numbers as allocated by your club on the front of singlet. Visiting teams please indicate race number to be used on the entry form.
  3. Non-club teams will need to supply letters and/or numbers for respective teams. 
  4. No runner may run more than one lap for any A and/or B team across all grades and races.
  5. Next lap runners must enter the start line from the side access, NOT VIA FINISH CHUTE where runners are finishing.
  6. Hand in team sheet with actual running order and self-taken times, to Race HQ immediately after your last runner finishes. Remember full names please.
  7. First Aid available. 
  8. Toilets available, no changing facilities, come prepared.
  9. ABSOLUTELY NO DOGS ARE PERMITTED AT BATTLE HILL FARM PARK
  10. Results will be posted on our results page.
  11. Winning team members - please remain for prize-giving which will be immediately after each relay race.

Saturday, 9 May 2020, 12:00 to 16:00: University Relays (interclub event) & Chocolate Walking Race, QEII Park, Mackay's Crossing

University Relays:

Inter-club cross country relay race. PLEASE DO NOT BRING DOGS - not even if they stay in the car. This is a condition of our use of the venue. This is because the venue is a farm.

Whittakers Chocolate Walk:

A turkey trot style race over 6km at QE2 Park in Paekakariki run by the University Athletics Club. Competitors estimate their time and race without a watch. The winner is the one who finishes closest to their estimated time.

Previous year's info:

The format will be the same as last year with the Chocolate Walk at noon, Boys & Girls Races from 1.15 pm and the main relay starting at 2.50 pm (all grades start together).

The event has four races: the walk, the youngsters races (for those under 15), the fun run for those U7, and the relay (for those 15 and over).

  • The Whittakers Chocolate Walk: open to walkers of all ages. Starts at 12 noon on the road in front of the field where the relay is held. Distance of approximately 6km. The $2 entry fee per walker will be collected at the start. Late entries will be taken at the start where time allows. Walkers must estimate their time with the winners being the walkers who are closest to their estimated time. Prizes for first female and first male.
  • The Youngsters' Races - four scratch races for athletes under 15 years of age, and a fun run for the under 7’s. Athletes 15 years and older can run in the junior relay. Prize giving for the four scratch races will be held shortly after the under 7’s fun run, just before the start of the relay. Age is taken as at 31 December 2020.
    1. Boys and girls under 9 start at 1.15pm; approx 1.2km - start is over the sandhills behind the start/finish area
    2. Boys and girls under 11 years start at 1.30pm; approx 2km loop from the start/finish area
    3. Boys and girls under 13 years start at 1.45pm; approx 2km loop from the start/finish area
    4. Boys and girls under 15 years start at 2.00pm; approx 2km loop from the start/finish area
    5. Boys and girls under 7 fun run at 2.15pm; 500m out and back frm the start/finish area 
  • The University Relay - 8 grades; junior men (under 20), junior women (under 20), open men, open women, masters men (35+), masters women (35+), masters men (50+), and masters women (50+). Relay teams comprise 4 persons, approximately 3.7km lap. Starts at 2.50pm with all grades to start together.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Age is taken as of 31st December 2020 OR in the case of Masters, age on the day of the event.
  • Dogs (loose, on leads, in cars) are STRICTLY NOT ALLOWED on the property. Please leave your canines at home.

Interclub cross country races. The race starts on grass in front of badminton Hall.

There is usually very limited parking available in the badminton hall carpark. Parking is best on Alexandra Road or Ruahine Street. Do not expect to use the badminton car park or facilities.

TIME, GRADE, DISTANCE:

  • Race 1, 12:40pm, 5km: Senior women, masters women 35, masters women 50, masters women 60, masters women 70+, masters men 60, masters men 70+, junior men MU-20, non-championship 5k men 20-59.
  • Race 2, 1:30pm, 3.7km: Junior women WU-20, youth women WU-18, girls GU-15, youth men MU-18, boys BU-15.
  • Race 3, 2:00pm, 1.6km: Boys B-U13, boys B-U11.
  • Race 4, 2.15pm, 1.6km: Girls G-U13, girls G-U11.
  • Race 5, 2:30pm, 10km: Senior men, masters men 35, masters men 50, non-championship 10k women 20+.

TEAMS AND INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Medals will be awarded to FIRST PLACE in each grade (except there will be no medals for either non-championship race).

Team Competition WINNERS will receive medals, with number to count in each grade as follows:

  • Open Men M20-99 10k only                                6
  • Open Women W20-99 5k only                            3
  • Masters Women MW50/60/70 combined            3
  • Junior Women WU20/WU18 combined               3
  • All other grades                                                    3

Masters runners are eligible for team competition in both the Open grade and their own Masters grade (except there will be no medals for either non-championship race).

The Barry Everitt Plate will be awarded to the Club scoring the highest number of points over all grades.  This will be based on participation, where every competitor will score points, with 100 points to the winner, e.g. Senior Women, 30 finishers, first place scores 100 points, last place scores 71 points (except the two non-championship races will not count towards this Club competition).

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A combination of bush track and sealed road on Mount Victoria. Race headquarters are at the WHAC Clubrooms on Alexandra Rd. All races start on the grassed area opposite Badminton Hall on Ruahine St.

AGE GRADES AND CLUB UNIFORM

Age at 31st December 2018, except Masters grades where age at 19th May 2018. As this event is only open to Registered Club Members, the correct club uniform must be worn.

Any athlete wishing to compete “out of grade” (e.g. junior in senior grade), must advise Ian Macfarlane macfarlane422@gmail.com and Daryl Bloomfield daryl@fedude.co.nz by 5:00pm Thursday 17 May.

PRIZEGIVING

Prize giving, following each race, will be near the finish line. If bad weather, will be at WHAC Clubrooms.

RACE ELIGIBILITY

The Vosseler Shield races are an Athletics New Zealand Sanctioned Event. Only Athletics NZ registered athletes who are financial members in the ANZ ClubNet database are eligible to compete. Athletes must be financial in ClubNet by midnight 16 May 2018 in order to compete. PAY YOUR SUBS NOW!!

TIMING AND RECORDING SYSTEM – CHANGES FOR 2018

Athletics Wellington provides the timing system. Race bibs will again be used for each of the 4 interclub races. The bibs will have timing chips on their reverse. These are new chips, not the ones previously used. Athletes must uplift their race bib from the WHAC clubrooms at least 30 minutes prior to the start of their race. Their race bib must be worn on the front of their club singlet. Their timing chips must be left securely on the reverse of the bibs. No bib or timing chips means you will not be recorded in the results.

Avoid the long queues by arriving at the WHAC clubrooms early. Race HQ is open from 11:30am.

CLOSING TIME FOR ENTRY AND RACE BIB PICK UP

For 2018 there is no online entry prior to the race. You must be financial in ClubNet as stated above to receive a race bib. If you are financial by Friday 11 May you will receive a personalised race bib on the day. If you are financial after 11 May and up to 16 May, you will receive a temporary race bib, which must be returned after the race. Race bib pick up at the WHAC clubrooms on race day 19 May from 11:30am

COURSE MARKING

The course will be marked with a combination of the following; tape, marker poles, arrows, cones and marshals. Where 2 marker poles are placed as a gate, runners must run between the marker poles. Where 1 marker pole is used, runners must run within 5m either side of the marker pole. When running adjacent to roads, athletes must run within the coned off verge area. Failure to comply with a marshal’s instruction or not following the correct course may result in disqualification.

 
 
Saturday, 30 May 2020, 13:45 to 16:00: Combined social run / walk with Hutt Valley Harriers, Hutt Valley Harriers Clubrooms, Petone Recreation Ground, Udy St

Every year we have a combined run or race with our friends from HVH - this year its their turn to host.

There is a runour that they might even be offering a beer mile race for those inclined to participate - it should be an amusing spectator event if nothing else!

Help out by bringing a plate of food to share afterwards.

 
 
Sunday, 31 May 2020, 11:00 to 15:00: Aurora Handicap Marathon, Silverstream

Start times for all events are based on the handicapper's estimate of the time you will take to complete your chosen event at 2.00pm All competitors have a reasonable chance to take line honours.



In addition to the designated merit prizes in the handicap section, merit prizes will be awarded for fastest times in the marathon, and a range of spot prizes will be available to all participants who attend the prize-giving. All entrants who complete the course will receive a certificate of achievement.



Soup and a light buffet meal will be available at about 3pm.

Saturday, 6 Jun 2020, 13:00 to 16:00: Olympic Harriers Club cross country champs, Pony Club, Boom Rock Road, Ohariu Valley

Club cross country champs. Races for all ages from juniors through to masters.

We are returning to where club champs were held back in the day.  The course will be different from the Grand Memorial, based around 1.8 km loops that will include a bit of a hill and fewer streams. The kids run a reduced 1km lap as we take the hill out for them. There is a trophy in each age group for both the winner and handicap winner, plus second and third get recorded with certificates - so it's all on! 


Please bring a plate for the afternoon tea at the clubrooms after the races. 

Be aware there may be no parking at the Pony Club paddocks due to wet ground, so parking will probably beon the road - take care as it is narrow in places.

  • Boys and girls, U13 U11: 2km (2 x 1km lap)

1:45 pm

  • Boys and girls, U19, U17 and U15: 3.6km (2 x 1.8km lap)
  • Walkers, all grades (2 x 1.8km lap)

Race Eligibility:
The Dorne Cup races are an Athletics New Zealand Sanctioned Event. Only Athletics NZ registered athletes who are financial members in the ANZ ClubNet database are eligible to compete.
Athletes must be financial in ClubNet by midnight 6 June 2018 in order to compete.

Age Grades and Club Uniform:
Age at 31st December 2018, except Masters grades where age at 9th June 2018. 
As this event is only open to Registered Club Members, the correct club uniform must be worn.

Any athlete wishing to compete “out of grade” (e.g. junior in senior grade), must advise Dave Moore and and Daryl Bloomfield  by 5:00pm Thursday 7 June 2018.

Clubs outside Athletics Wellington Centre should send a list of entries by spreadsheet, listing name, date of birth, sex, and Club name to Dave Moore (da.me.moore@xtra.co.nz) and Daryl Bloomfield (daryl@fedude.co.nz) by 5:00pm Wednesday 6 June 2018.

Location: The races are held in Trentham Memorial Park, Trentham.  Enter from Barton Avenue (off Fergusson Drive).  Race headquarters will be located inside the Park adjacent to the Pavilion near the Trentham United Harrier Club Rooms.

Course Description
A flat cross-country event around the picturesque Trentham Memorial Park and the Hutt River stop banks.  The course is suitable for spikes.  An Athletics New Zealand sanctioned event.

Protests and Appeals:
IAAF Competition Rules 146 covers protests and appeals.  In the first instance, any protest must be made to the Race Referee, within 30 minutes of the finish of the race. Referee’s decision will be given to the Race Director. Any appeal must be made to the Race Director.

Athletes are reminded of IAAF Rule 144 (3)(b) which states “For the purpose of this Rule, the following examples shall be considered assistance, and are therefore not allowed…. Possession or use of video recorders, radios, CD, radio transmitters, mobile phone or similar devices in the competition area.”   This rule covers the use of iPods / MP3 players.  Athletes who use any such device while competing in any race at the Dorne Cup may be subject to a protest and disqualification.

Marshals:
Marshals are clearly identifiable with either orange or yellow Hi-Viz vests around the course. If you are injured or observe an injury or problem of any kind please report to the nearest marshal. All competitors must obey the directions of marshals.  Failure to follow the directions of a marshal may result in disqualification.

Course Markings:

Teams Awards
The first four runners from each club in all grades, except Open Men, will count towards the Teams Awards.

The first six runners from each club in Race 6 will count towards the Open Men’s Teams Award, with the winning team being awarded the Dorne Cup.

An Open Men’s team may comprise Seniors, Masters 35+, 40+, and 50+.  An Open Women’s team may comprise Masters 35+, 50+ and 60+

Masters who make up an Open Men’s /Women’s team who have run out of grade as a SM or SW do not also qualify for their respective Masters Men team awards, otherwise Masters who make up the Open team will also count towards their respective Masters Grade team.

Individual Awards

Medals will be award to the first three place-getters in each grade.

Individual Masters who, with the exception of those who run out of grade, make up an Open team will qualify for the individual medals in their respective age grade.

1.00pm (6k): Masters Women (35+), Masters Women (50+), Open Women (SW), Masters Men (60+), Masters Men (70), Masters Women (60+).

1.30pm (4k): Men Under 20 (MU20), Women Under 20 (WU20), Men Under 18 (MU18), Women Under 18 (WU18).

2.00pm (2k): Boys & Girls Under 11 (BU11/GU11), Boys & Girls Under 13 (BU13/GU13)

2.15pm (3k): Boys Under 15(BU15), Girls Under 15  (GU15)

2.30pm (1k): Boys Under 9 (BU9), Girls Under 9 (GU9)

2.45pm (8k): Open Men (SM), Masters Men (35+) & (50+)

Courses:

2km Loop

This loop cuts out the old horse paddock and the 2km distance is made up by an extended section that goes around the children’s soccer fields.  This means the 2km loop finishes with a straight line run back up to the finish chute, as opposed to finishing on a corner as in previous years.

Dorne Cup 2km loop

4km Loop

 We are cutting out the old horse paddock and replacing this with two sections of bush run and a different section around the rugby fields.  There will also now be only one water crossing in the 4km loop.

Saturday, 27 Jun 2020, 13:00 to 16:00: Grand Memorial club races and Old Members Day (club event), Boom Rock Road, Ohariu Valley

Open handicap cross country races. This event commemorates our first club president, who died while in office, as well as a number of club members who died in the First World War.

Former club members are invited to join us. This year, we will be joined by Vic Uni Athletics Club, as well as soldiers from the Army's 1 Command Support Regiment.

This race will be followed by afternoon tea at the clubrooms - please bring a plate to share.

Race details:

1.30pm: Boys & Girls 9 and Under (1km scratch race), Boys & Girls 13 and Under (2km scratch race)

2.00pm-ish: Walkers;
Senior Women, Masters Women, Junior Women (W-U18 & W-U20), Junior Men (M-U18 & M-U20) (4km open handicap);
Senior Men & Masters Men (8km open handicap)

(Both handicap races – 4km and 8km – will be run concurrently with one finish time.)

Hot showers and afternoon tea at the Clubrooms following the final race – please bring a towel and a plate.
