Olympic Harriers Centenary 1914–2014
A century of running
The Olympic Harrier Club celebrates its centenary in 2014. We were formed in 1914 as an off-shoot of the old Brooklyn Harrier Club, and after one hundred years we are stronger than ever with healthy membership levels at all ages and at all levels of competitiveness. We are one of the country’s top clubs, having won the North Island Cross Country top club trophy in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. We consistently send large teams to compete at national events, we have a strong family focus and a strong connection to the community, with the fun run events that we organise each year.
Our centennial celebrations
Whether you’re an ex-member, a current member or a friend, help us to celebrate our centenary! We are holding a number of events thoughout 2014, starting with a festival of events during the early part of the year and building up to our main reunion celebrations held over Queen’s Birthday weekend.
Festival of events
We are starting off our celebrations at the beginning of the year with a festival of events – a variety of running events to give our club members and the community a taste of what we do. More details will be available later.
Our main celebration is taking place over Queen’s Birthday Weekend – Friday 30 May to Monday 2 June 2014. This weekend will be full of events for current and previous members – relive your Olympic days with the Grand Memorial handicap cross country race, a formal dinner and memorabilia!
Our tentative schedule is:
- Friday 6.30pm: registration, history display and social
- Venue: The Johnsonville Club, 1 Norman Lane (off Johnsonville Road), Johnsonville)
- Saturday 1.30pm: Grand Memorial open handicap cross country race (venue: Boom Rock Road, Ohariu Valley)
- Saturday 3.30pm: afternoon tea (Olympic clubrooms). Registration will also be available for those not attending the Friday night social.
- Saturday 7.00pm: grand dinner and guest speaker
- Sunday 9.30am: Sunday run (from Olympic clubrooms)
- Sunday late morning: brunch and photographs
- Registration: $20
- Friday night social event: $35 (some drinks included)
- Saturday evening grand dinner: $65 (includes set menu dinner)
Registration is a compulsory fee; a centenary registration pack is included. The Friday night social and Saturday grand dinner are optional. Guest tickets for the social and dinner will be available. The Saturday race and afternooon tea, and the Sunday run and brunch are free for registered attendees.

We will have a souvenir book of history, stories and photographs from the last one hundred years available to purchase. There will also be centenary-branded mugs, shirts and hooded sweatshirts available. You can order these when you register for the weekend.
